What
IB Means Around the USA
State
and provincial initiatives
California: students with exemplary results in IB mathematics and
science now qualify for governor scholarships of up to US$6,000 for higher
education. An expansion of the current US$1.05 million provided annually
for IB teacher training is being negotiated to extend this to the Middle
Years Programme and Primary Years Programme.
Florida: provides
large incentives for IB world schools; for each IB score of four or higher,
and for each IB diploma earned, money is returned to the school district.
This conservatively yields US$15-20 million each year.
In addition, students
earning the IB diploma are awarded a four-year scholarship to any state
university, with a total value of US$10,800.
Finally, the IB Diploma was legalized by the state in April 1995. Any
Florida student pursuing the full IB diploma meets state graduation requirement,
whether or not he/she earns the diploma.
Minnesota:
examination fee subsidies, teacher training scholarships US$1, 250,000
per year.
In addition, IB students
who take 5 or more IB exams are eligible for scholarships to public and
private universities in the state.
Oklahoma: has
included the IBO in legislation to provide funds for exam fees, material
grants, and teacher training for all three IB programmes.
South Carolina:
examination fee subsidies US$125,000 per year.
Texas: examination
fee subsidies, teacher training scholarships US$600,000 per year.
Will Texas also offer
a scholarship option?
